#SH with Emma Godfrey

Hi Emma, can you introduce yourself to us?

Absolutely! My name is Emma, I'm a 21 year old Houston-based, South African with a passion for all things wellness, holistic health, and lifestyle. You’ll probably find me sitting in a coffee shop sipping an oat milk latte, taking a long walk outside, creating content, or curled up reading a good book. I believe that becoming the best version of who you were created to be starts on the inside. I love nourishing my body with whole foods, moving in ways that feel good, and taking care of my mental health. I’m a HUGE fan of daily journaling, practicing self-care, and having deep meaningful conversations with those I'm close to.

Can you take us through your self-love journey to where you are now?

My journey has definitely not been linear or easy and is an ongoing process. I moved to Houston at age 17 and experienced a lot of sudden change, traumas, and sickness in the span of just a few years. It took a major toll on both my physical and mental health. It wasn't until as little as 6 months ago, when I hit the lowest point I've ever been, for me to finally realize that something needed to change. I was sick, depressed, and anxious and I needed help.

What has played the biggest role in my self-love journey is my faith in God. Realizing that I am loved by Him and letting Him guide me has been the true reason for my healing. I am also very fortunate to have a loving, supportive mother who has been my rock through it all.

I still have a long way to go and my journey is still so far from over. But I am so proud of how far I have already come and I now make sure to take time everyday to practice self-love.

What are some of your favorite self-love + self-care practices?

My favorite self-love practices are buying some flowers for my desk, taking myself out for a coffee date, spending some time alone in nature, and giving myself an afternoon to just read.

My favorite self-care practices consist of reading my Bible every morning, journaling, going on daily walks, prioritizing my skincare routine, making home-cooked meals, and taking time away from my phone and/or social media.

What are you most proud of so far in your journey? What have you overcome that you used to struggle with? (or what have you improved that you used to struggle with?)

I am most proud of myself for making the choice to keep going and never give up. There were many, many days when I thought I wasn't going to make it. In fact, I still have those days. But I make the choice to keep showing up and keep persevering, knowing that better days are coming.

How would you like your self-love journey to inspire other people?

I would like my journey to inspire others by helping them realize that they are stronger than they think. Life is tough and we don't have the power to control many of the situations that come our way. But we are in control of our response to those situations. We can choose to focus on the positive or the negative. We can choose to keep going or give up. I want others to know that they are capable of withstanding the storm, that they are so much stronger than they give themselves credit for. You'll make it though and it'll all be worth it. –

Have you ever gone on a date with yourself? If yes, what was your favorite experience? If not, what would you like to do?

Yes, of course! I love going on little solo dates, it's one of my favorite ways to practice self-love!

Probably my favorite experience so far was when I took myself out for a coffee date on a rainy Saturday. I brought my favorite oat milk latte, found a little corner by a window, and sipped my coffee while doing some work and watching the rain fall outside. It was such a peaceful afternoon and I loved it.

What is one major change that you made in your life that has affected you most positively?

One major change I have made in life that has affected me positively is practicing gratitude daily. By expressing and focusing on all the wonderful blessings I already have instead of focusing on what I don't have has made me a happier, more positive, and motivated person.

What are you currently struggling with that you could use more assistance or practice with to improve?

Something I am currently struggling with and could use some improvement is balancing work with rest. I tend to just keep working and never stop until I reach the point of complete burnout. It's not healthy and is actually counterproductive because I'm unable to do anything for days at a time until I've fully recovered. I would like to incorporate time to rest and recharge into my weeks.

What are you most looking forward to in your future?

I'm just excited to see what the future has in store for me! There are so many unknowns and so much can change in such a short time, which is pretty terrifying, but in the best way possible.

What is your favorite part of your morning ritual?

My favorite part of my morning ritual is making my morning oat milk latte (can you tell I like coffee haha?)

What is your favorite part of your evening ritual?

My favorite part of my evening ritual is climbing into bed with a good book.

What would your ideal wellness ritual look and feel like?

My ideal wellness ritual is starting everyday with a 30-60 minute quiet time, reading my Bible, praying, journaling, and centering myself before the busyness of the day begins.

What tools/resources do you currently use to improve your life?

Some tools/resources that I currently use to improve my life are journals, podcasts, books, and social media like Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube to inspire me and connect me to other like-minded creators!

What does Self Honeymoon mean to you?

Self Honeymoon to me means taking care of yourself from the inside out.
